Safflower
Naturally yellow from delicate flower petals
Safflower is obtained from the dried petals of the Carthamus tinctorius plant, which thrives in dry, sunny climates with well-drained soil. The plant has been cultivated for centuries, traditionally for dyeing textiles and later for culinary and cosmetic use.
After harvesting, the petals are gently dried and processed using water or mild solvents to extract the yellow pigment called carthamin. The pigment is water-soluble and often used in powdered form or as a liquid extract. Because the pigment is sensitive to light and oxidation, the extraction and drying process is done carefully to preserve its natural brightness and ensure color stability in suitable conditions.
